GM Slips Noose and Readies for a Run
Wednesday December 3, 2:14 pm ET

By James J. Cramer,

Talk about a virtuous circle! General Motors (NYSE:GM - News) is screaming today off a terrific report by ax Gary Lapidus at Goldman Sachs. The catalyst? Auto sales? Ditech mortgages? Union negotiations? Nope, nope and nope.

The pension plan.

Not that long ago, we were desperately worried that GM's pension woes could bankrupt the darned place. Now, with a couple of months of good portfolio performance coupled with a high-yield deal that worked, Lapidus believes that the pension plan's now in decent shape. If GM puts a little more money into it -- $4 billion to $6 billion -- Lapidus says the pension plan could be "breakeven or better."
