Your cable company is just one hop.

Most corporations have T1 lines or better, which is sufficient to send voice over IP. But, it has to go through a few hops to get to the backbone and a few more hops to get to the destination. The result is that the voice quality is really bad. To make matters worse, MCI controls most of the backbone and they've already publicly stated that they won't give it away indefinitely. The ISPs on the individual hops won't carry data free, either, once a lot of voice data is sent their way. Even today, 20-30% of the packets are tossed in the bit bucket during peak afternoon hours even without widespread voice data!

There's a good article on the subject in LAN Times at lantimes.com.

We might see 10% of corporate voice traffic carried over IP by 2000. The main driver for increased PC usage is in one of Michael's posts on another thread - plain old net usage. The day his neighbors stop asking him in his back yard about stocks will be the day we see increased PC buying driven by the net.
