Here is the way I see it: the masses are socially conservative and economically "liberal". They hate gays, but they also hate "the man". The intellectual elite in this country are the exact opposite. They are socially liberal, but economically conservative. They are "the man", and they want to keep all the money for themselves. They don't want to be restricted by social values in how they celebrate their wealth.

The media are run by the elite. Fox is appealing to people who hate the liberal social bias of the media. They serve their viewers a cocktail of conservative social messages, but they slip the poison pill of capitalism and free trade in the drink.
