Interesting article, but:

In Arabic, tahrir, or liberation, and ihtilal, or occupation, have much greater moral and emotional and even religious significance.

OK, "tahrir" means "liberation", although it should be added here that it is in particular the liberation of the slave. "Hurr", or "free", that is derived from this word, is the opposite of "slave".

On the other hand, "ihtilal" does not mean "occupation", but "revolt", or "revolution". One could talk of the French "Ihtilal" that ended the Middle Ages, for example.
