Chris, I was in the Army during part of that time. The people who had the political clout to get into any branch of the reserves or the National Guard were generally referred to as "No Gos," for the NG designation in their serial numbers. In fact, some of the less politically connected NGs ended up in combat, but no such fate for the George Dubya's, the Dan Quayle's and the Kent Bentsons. As Senator Dodd said, the Vietnam War was the acid test of our generation and many of us, including Dodd, himself, failed that test.
