You forget there are no winner take all states in the Dem primaries and 37% of delegates are held by party leaders and officials. Even if Dean were to win half the primaries by pluralities over the other 8 candidates, the other 8 (and especially the top 5) will still control roughly two-thirds of the delegates.

Dean is like Bill Bradley in 1999 except that instead of one Al Gore he's running against five of them. I would expect the five to unite in the end against Dean.
Dean has already pledged to vigorously support whomever the nominee may be. The best compromise candidate would be Al Gore. I believe he would beat GW Bush. I believe Dean cannot.
