I suspect that young people are bunching up to shout religious slogans for the same reason that they once bunched up to shout political slogans. It feels good to be part of a bunch, and to say the same things as everybody else. It’s not about belief, it’s about a sense of belonging. Young people often want to feel like part of something bigger, especially when it’s something that lets them feel smug and superior.

Most of them will grow out of it.

The stuff about homosexuality emerging as a key issue is a bit weird, though, and a bit unsettling. It will be interesting to see what happens when groupthink collides with the individual rights of an unpopular group.
