I would guess that the Clintons would love for Dean to be the candidate in 2004, then Hillary can run against a non-incumbent Republican in 2008

It might be a silver lining for the Clintons, but they don't love Dean. If Dean gets the nomination, there goes the Clintons' control of the Democratic party. That's why the Clintons have thrown their backing (and their people) behind Wes Clark.
