I am attempting to find a compromise between the PETA view which tends toward anthropomorphic rights and a do what I damn well please attitude as some sort of god given human right.

I suggest that a cow can be violated (treated wrongly by a human). Does the cow have a 'right' to sue? Of course not. Should the human be held accountable for wrong doing? I think yes. Do beasts have the right to protection from inhumane treatment? If so, then we begin the discussion of animal rights at that point. If not, then I can light the kitty that I 'own' on fire and drag it behind my pickup truck on my private property for amusement. Who does it hurt?
