"We do not consider the cat to have much significance, even though we do not want to promote cruelty..........

If you look at the criteria I set, you will see that I consider suffering and death an inevitable condition in life. Recognizing that entities have rights does not effect that condition in any way except that it prohibits malicious disregard or deliberate cruelty and corruption. Your cat has no significance with respect to my interests in life but I have an obligation to see that it is not mistreated. Being put to death or even eaten with respect to the conditions or the circumstance does not connote a violation to the animal.

The animal would have no claim regarding it's rights except that they be protected. Human beings are the arbiters of those rights... comes with dominion.
