I visit China on average about 4 or 5 times a year and spend two to three months on the ground while I am there and have developed a wide and diverse network of friends and acquaintances at all levels, up to and including the People's Congress. Make no mistake on this issue -- it is one of the few things capable of uniting Chinese public opinion. I don't need another General to tip me off to this. I have seen it repeatedly for myself. This has nothing to do with what I fear -- the issue is whether we have people in the White House who are so out of touch with reality that they think this is an issue where there is room to play.
