Lecture by expert on China

PETALING JAYA: Is China’s economic miracle durable? Or is the future for China one that is quite dark? Each of these scenarios is, in its own way, not implausible.

Prof Orville Schell, Dean of the University of California, Berkeley, suggests that China’s entire political and economic system is in a perilously balanced transition. China has weathered many recent crises but Prof Schell believes its big test has yet to come.

He will address the subject in a lecture entitled “What is China’s long-term prognosis? Success or failure?” on Monday at 4pm at the Cybertorium in Menara Star here.

Prof Schell studied at Harvard University and obtained his PhD in Chinese history at the University of California, Berkeley, where he is currently Dean of the Graduate School of Journalism.

The lecture, organised by Star Publications and the Asian Centre for Media Studies, is open to the public. For invitations, fax 03-7957 7641.
