Geneva Accord authors meet U.N.'s Annan

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan Friday welcomed signatories to the Geneva Accord between independent Israelis and Palestinians.

Leading the delegation were former Israeli Justice Minister Yossi Beilin and former Palestinian Interior Minister Yasser Abed Rabbo.

In a statement issued afterward, Annan's spokesman, Fred Eckhard, said, "The Road Map remains the key mechanism in moving towards the goals on which there is already broad agreement."

He was referring to the plan sponsored by The Quartet of the European Union, Russia, the United Nations and the United States.

"The Road Map and the Peoples' Initiative ... are consistent and compatible with the Quartet's Road Map," the Annan statement said.

Beilin said Annan told the accord authors, "I am sure that in the next meeting of The Quartet this issue will be brought up."

Beilin said both U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell during an earlier meeting Friday in Washington, referred to the Geneva initiative as "complementary" to the road map.

Abed Rabbo called the Road Map "The mother of all initiatives."
