The differences are so minimal as to be unworthy of mention. Fascism could be described as fundamentalist nationalism. In each case we have the insistence on unquestioning acceptance of doctrine, and in each case we have absolute control by an unaccountable leadership

Steven, these two assertions contradict each other. If Fascism is a religion, then so is Islamism, or "fundamentalist Islam" as you call it. Indeed, it qualifies easily as it calls itself a religion, the only true religion if you listen to its adherents - Islamists consider non-Islamist Muslims to be infidels and have no compunction about blowing them up, as we saw a couple of weeks ago in Istanbul. If Islamism is a religion, then we are in a religious war between Western Civilization/Liberalism and Islamism.

Furthermore, I do not believe any survey of the evidence or following the arguments in the Arab world, will support your contention that fundamental Islam is a "fringe" phenomenon. It may be a minory opinion, but it's a minority opinion with guns and money and sympathizers - both individual and governmental - in plenty.
