I'm not sure if I'm really in agreement with this alarmist view of the cable companies. I don't think they are quite as effective as this article suggests. While AOL sucks, and has a horrible habit of breaking the legs of the Internet for its naive subscribers, I specifically sought out a cable connection precisely because they avoid the nanny-state attitude of AOL and offer me free and undiluted access to the entire http:// universe. I think this fear about cable networks may be overblown. At least speaking from my experience. And discounting the fact that I haven't seen how other cable operators control access. The only drawback to cable access is that it is expensive, and not available to folks who are struggling to make ends meet.
