Lindy, so Taiwan should remain forever a country of second class citizens of the world? No UN seat? No recognition in the family of nations? Not as important as, for example, Fiji or Tonga or New Zealand? <It would also be very useful for the administration to make it clear to the Taiwanese that they must restrain themselves on the subject of independence and not encourage their Washington lobbyists to beat the drums for military action that the United States definitely does not need. >
It looks very like appeasement to me. Austria was part of Germany, and so it turned out was Poland. Megalomania knows no bounds.
When Quebec votes on independence, the rest of Canada doesn't threaten to do bulk murder of Quebecois and keep it there by force, despite there being a lot more reason to do so, such as access between Ontario and the eastern provinces. Note that Quebec has preferred to stay Canadian. Wisely in my opinion.
But independence would be a reasonable choice too. Especially if a sensible New United Nations constitution was to be created to make it a good supranational body to handle shared interests which are best handled on a multinational basis [such as oceans, air, radio frequency, trade rules, security].
When people threaten murder to force others to be submissive and mere chattels, rather than have them choose their own way of life, it's a very atavistic approach to life in the 21st century. I suppose China has had Maoistic murder in a civil war in very recent memory, and continues with intense state control, so this is just a continuation of that belligerent and repressive psychology.
