I've seen a number of articles on the so called peak production of oil, and have yet to see one that is less than absurd. For example on the article you posted:

<<<Production fell in '01 and '02, and looks likely to fall again in '03. In other words, the zenith of the Oil Age may have already passed.>>>

The world's economy has been in the dumpster for the past 3 years, and oil demand has been down for the same period. Not to mention Iraqi production has been all but halted. That doesn't mean production has peaked, that means it would be brain dead to pump more oil than demand calls for since there would be no place to store it.

What do these clowns who write those books think OPEC does? OPEC strictly limits production in order to prevent over supply to cause the bottom to drop out of the market.

The sophistry that it should be okay to kill people in order for US oil companies to gain control of a country's resources is the kind of thought process which clearly identifies the criminally insane. That's like saying it's okay to gun down your neighbor to steal his TV set, because you don't want to pay him for it and you figure you need it worse than he does. It's the last propaganda line of defense once everyone figures out there were no WMDs, no terrorists, and no intention to liberate anyone.

The sad fact of the matter is most publicly owned US companies have been so thoroughly gutted by insiders they can't compete in any market they don't control.

The reason you won't see any large scale move to alternative energy sources is because the oil companies don't make money off alternative energy sources. You could cut oil consumption in the US by at least 20% within a year simply by revoking the licenses of drivers who don't know how to drive. The 5% of drivers who don't know how to drive account for 100% of the fuel wasting congestion. So instead of letting grandma get on the freeway doing 10 MPH in the middle of rush hour, blocking traffic for 20 miles behind her, the typical 2 hour stop and go commute would be cut to 30 minutes. Grandma wouldn't like it, and the oil companies wouldn't like, but everyone else would be well pleased.
