I couldn't disagree more. What you say sounds good in principle. But, go up to a veteran in a wheel chair and tell him that it was OK for him to sacrifice his legs for that flag, but we Americans don't value the flag enough to protect it here in our country. That soldiers freedom was far more restricted by losing his legs, than any protester could lose by not being allowed to desecrate an American flag.

Tell the mother and father of a son or daughter, who lost their life, that we won't protect the very flag that their child died to protect. We should not allow anyone to bring further pain to that family.

Our country should have some standards. Free speech is necessary and the basis for our democracy, but there has to be limits to the amount of pain that you can cause to others with your free speech.

There are some things that are sacred. Our flag is sacred and should be treated with care and respect. It does not take away free speech to make it against the law to intentionally desecrate an American flag.
