Do you have any statistics you could provide on Taxi Cab driver mortality in Finland?

The participants of Taxi-L dedicate this page

IN MEMORIAM

In respectful memory of taxicab and livery drivers throughout the world who lost their lives in service to the public.

All of the following died as a consequence of robbery or assault.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Total identified as of December 5, 2003

822

The list is significantly understated.

Hundreds of additional taxicab driver homicides are known to have occurred in the US, but identifying information is not available, so the drivers' names do not appear on this list. For large areas of the world, almost no information is available, including Central and South America, most of Asia and Africa, and the former Soviet states.

This list is being built real-time from modest research sources - a few news search engines on the Internet. The ongoing update is weighted towards the United States and Canada, simply as a consequence of the greater presence of North American media on the Internet.

The primary researchers are:

- Charles Rathbone, who used newspaper sources to create a database of cab drivers murdered prior to 1995, mostly in the United States.

- Terry Smythe, who used Internet news sources to compile a list of 319 cab drivers murdered worldwide from January 1998 to August 2003, a rate of 1.09 per week. In the US, 211 homicides were identified during the period, roughly one every ten days.

- Norman Beattie, who used newspapers and government records to prepare a comprehensive review of Canadian cab driver homicides dating back to 1919.

To advise of corrections or omissions, or to link up with an emerging support group for close family and friends of murdered cab drivers, please contact Charles Rathbone.
