Tackling China won't be easy for SMEs: economist
China's rise is double-edged - it can drive world growth and also bring instability into the global market

By DANIEL BUENAS

SMALL and medium-sized firms thinking of jumping on the China bandwagon must look past the business hype and exercise extreme caution, an economist said yesterday.

Jonathan Story, professor of international political economy and Shell Fellow in economic transformation at European business school Insead, told BT in an interview: 'Smaller firms underestimate all the problems of getting to know the local market and getting set up. 'There are lots of horror stories in China, and the environment is incredibly difficult to do business for new entrants.'
