You wrote:"The right to burn the flag as a form of protest must always be allowed in a free country." Nonsense. The right to protest must be protected, but there must be limits. For instance, someone can't protest by burning someone's home down. Someone shouldn't be allowed to protest by threatening other people, but they do it all the time. Someone shouldn't step on other people's rights, while they are protesting, but they do it all the time. When protesters close down part of a city, they are violating huge numbers of other people's rights. You wrote:"As distasteful as it might seem to many, it is far more distasteful to violate the first amendment." Absolute nonsense. You can protect first amendment rights and still not allow someone to purposefully desecrate the flag. There are always limits and standards to any rule. You wrote:"The American Legion and Boy Scouts burn thousands of flags every year in respectful retirement ceremonies." So, it is not an act of purposeful desecration of our flag. A three year old can determine that. You wrote:"The difference between these burnings and the protester burnings are the thoughts of the persons doing the burning." And the intent of each act is very easy to determine. You wrote:"Are you advocating thought control? Certainly not I would hope." Our legal system is based, in part, upon intent. Juries have to determine intent every day of the week. But, yes I am advocating thought control! Anyone found being guilty of the hideous crime of being a Democrat, should not only have a lobotomy of the brain, but also should be castrated so they can't continue to breed! |
