I am familiar with the Muslim history, not the Islam religion history, but the history of the political infighting that goes on to succeed to the throne.

Then you must brief yourself on the relationship between the Saudi Royal family and the Wahhabist sect of Islam:

saudhouse.virtualave.net (definitely biased against Saudis)

quickstart.clari.net

As you can see, this is not the first time the Saudi family has had to take on the Ihkwan (Moslem Brotherhood), who they had allied with to bring themselves to power.

The fact that the Saudis owe much to the Wahhabist and Ihkwan for their current legitimacy, but yet have faced internal subversion from them, indicates the delicate balance of power that exists within Saudi Arabia.

I, in no way, condone the Saudi royals as legitimate rulers. I just prefer them to their Wahhabist clerics and militants.
