The American warplane was targeting Mullah Wazir (search), once a local commander for the hard-line Islamic militia.

That does nothing to make it acceptable to me.

I can think of several possible scenarios to explain this...but none are acceptable.

If the story is correct, and the kids were playing outside in view...Clearly, at minimum, a tactical error was made. I believe in being very aggressive in combat, yet, I also know American troops would not kill 9 kids...not even to get saddam.
