It's real alright, but it's also classic (almost 19th century like) boom bust material. The key word to understanding all this is "maladjusted".

(d) and transportation to move everybody and everything around
(e) and factories to build the transporters
(f) and ...>

All this requires an enormous amount of energy, and that's not there cheaply and new supply is years away. That's your missing link.
