IMO, the current Iron Hammer approach in Iraq is a result of something very fundamental. There is a mindset that gravitates toward traditional thinking (and politically conservative parties) that simply can't tolerate the complex. Every question must have a simple black 'n' white answer - and the strict father knows that answer. If such a mind is opposed, it first reacts with denial. If that denial is challenged, violence to force the opposer to "toe the line" will be used. That such an approach sows the seeds of its own destruction, never occurs to such a mentality.
