Remember, George Wallace and Jesse Jackson both came close to getting the nomination in the past. Buchanon did the same in the GOP. Dukakis was bad enough. Also McCarthy came close and would have lost to Nixon in a landslide. Why did RFK enter the race late in the game? To stop who? Can't remember, but it was someone they were worried about. What that McCarthy? Anyway, Gore could be this years's RFK.

A little history lesson, son. There is no way that Wallace, Jackson or Buchanan could have received the nominations of their respective parties. They never had enough broad based support. I would add Gene McCarthy to that list. While he certainly tapped into a reservoir of anti-LBJ sentiment, he still would have fallen short.

RFK only entered the race about two weeks before Johnson withdrew, but only after McCarthy had shown Johnson to be vulnerable. He certainly did not enter the race to "stop" McCarthy. RFK was in the race to drive a stake through the heart of Johnson. I have always felt that RFK would have been able to wrest the nomination away from HH. He was too late to the game. McCarthy had the left staked out. A lesson there for Gore.
