I still think Mercedez is king of the road, whereas BMW and Audi have a lot of expensive problems. Audi lightly built, and finicky. Bad repair record. BMW's break down and costs thousands to fix. Now a Borgward was a good car, but here is it impossible to find parts.

Best cheapest cars I have ever owned are the Mercedez diesel, the fuel injected 245 DL Volvo, and the fuel injected 411 Volkswagen. The Austin 1100 was too delicate re its engine, but is was a good car otherwise. Excellent hydraulic suspension and good steeting. The Mini Cooper S was a good utilitarian small car. The MGB was well engineered and had good handling.

I would like to try the new Mini, as long as it does not have Lucas Electricals, and its record starts to stack up. On the whole if I were to take a chance, I would lean towards the new Beetle or a Saab.
