NEW YORK, Dec 8 - Shares of stun-gun maker Taser International Inc. <TASR.O> soared on Monday after Cincinnati's mayor called for the city to come up with $1 million to pay for its electro-muscular shockers following the death of a man involved in a struggle with city police. Mayor Charlie Luken said on Sunday he would look to cut 34 city jobs to pay for $1 million in Tasers for police officers after Nathaniel Jones's heart stopped after a scuffle with police, according to reports in newspapers including the Cincinnati Enquirer and the Cincinnati Post. The six officers involved in the struggle did not have Tasers, according to the Enquirer. The stock was up $2.80, or 3.4 percent, to $85.59 in late afternoon trading after earlier touching a record high. The shares have soared more than 2,000 percent so far this year as investors bet sales of the weapons will climb as police departments and military authorities search for non-deadly methods to quell disturbances. "Obviously, their product is very successful," said James Park, a trader for Brean Murray & Co. "The headlines from Cincinnati are definitely a catalyst," he added.
