My check with some folks at equipement companies including AMAT seems to indicate that the order environment is improving very nicely. Right now it appears that certain regions especially in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan is buying more aggressively than North America and Europe. But fab capacity is tightening up all over the world and to me, it appears a mini upturn is looming, providing robust order pattern till first half of 2004.

Now if this Christmas season consumes up more electronic goods than anticipated, there will be shortages of components and will put severe constraint on fab capacity.
Already in certain sectors such as camera phones, the manufacturers will not be able to meet the demand this Christmas due to component shortage.

The environment looks much more encouraging for semi equipment manufacturers to have sustainable recovery.
