How about informing THEM that this is not a religious war and it is ok to kill atheists too.

Do you think that there were no atheists in the WTC on 9/11, or in that nightclub on Bali, or on those streets in Istanbul, or in any of several hundred other places that have been attacked by terrorists?

I'd be willing to bet that Osama and Co. hate atheists and agnostics every bit as much as they hate Christians and Jews.

This notion that they want to kill only Christians and Jews is risible. They want to kill all of us, not because of our religion or our lack of it, but because we are successful and they are not, we are powerful and they are not. We are successful and power because we have tucked superstition back into the churches where it belongs, and run our society according to the principles of reason.

They would also like to convince the large number of Muslims that are not committed to their cause that this is a religious war, and that all Muslims are obligated to support it. We would like to convince this group that this is not a religious war, and that the lunatic fringe are criminals who are manipulating religion to serve their own ends.

This is why the "religious war" characterization plays into the hands of our enemies.
