Taiwan TSMC Upgrades 2004 Hiring Estimate To 3,000 From 2,500 Tuesday December 9, 12:12 am ET
TAIPEI -(Dow Jones)- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. plans to recruit around 3,000 people in 2004, up from a previous estimate of 2,500, partly because of its revised capital spending plans, a company official said Tuesday. However, the revision "may not mean a difference in our confidence levels (in terms of business outlook). It may mean we're more clear on our expansion plans" for next year, said J.H. Tzeng, the company's public relations manager.
Last week, TSMC's board of directors approved US$1.43 billion in new spending on advanced chip-manufacturing equipment that would extend through 2005.
Tzeng said the company forecast in November it would likely need 2,500 new workers next year, including around 1,500 engineers.
The new recruits partly reflected capacity expansion plans, he said, but the company also has to replace a number of employees each year.
He said TSMC has around 15,000 employees in all, and its worker turnover rate "currently is over 10%."
The company also announced last month it would likely hire 500 engineers and a few hundred chip plant workers by the end of 2003, Tzeng said. He said he didn't know whether or not those plans had changed. |
