For N.H. Publisher, a Tailor-Made Candidate

My, this brought back memories. NH is my home state and I remember the Loebs very well. The Union Leader was influential because of the NH primary and because it was (still is) the only statewide paper. NH is a small market - the same size as NJ but 1/8 the population - and if you wanted NH news you had to read the NH paper and watch the NH TV station, WMUR. The Boston media just covered the "important" stuff like the Pam Smart trial. William Loeb was a real SOB - in particular during the Ford presidency and 1976 presidential campaign, he was running editorials headlined "Jerry the Jerk" and "Kissinger the Kike" (!). His widow, Nackey Scripps Loeb, was as strongly conservative, but at least preserved the decencies of debate. OTOH, the Boston papers, particularly the Globe, have always had a condescending attitude towards NH. Mike Barnicle in particular seemed to think you had to throw us on our backs to get our shoes on us. :-/
