NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Helped by increased investor demand for Chinese-based Internet companies, Ctrip.com International Ltd. (CTRP) shares rose sharply in initial trading Tuesday.

Ctrip, a Chinese travel site based in Shanghai but incorporated in the Cayman Islands, traded on the Nasdaq Stock Market recently at $26 a share, 44% above the $18 offering price set on its initial public offering of 4.2 million American depositary shares. Each ADS represents two common shares.
