U.S. and China agree to talks on the yuan
Roger Runningen Bloomberg News
Tuesday, December 9, 2003

WASHINGTON A group led by the U.S. Treasury plans to begin talks with China in January aimed at persuading Beijing to accelerate moves to let its currency float freely, according to a U.S. official.

The plan, unveiled late Monday in Washington, came as President George W. Bush prepared to press Prime Minister Wen Jiabao of China to abandon his country's currency policy, which U.S. manufacturers say gives China an unfair advantage in world trade.

Wen, who this week is making his first visit to the United States, has said that any differences can be "ironed out gradually."

China has repeatedly said it is committed to moving toward a free-floating currency, without saying when.
