Output of ICT (information and communications technology) by Chinese companies will triple by 2010, taking it past Japan and the U.S. to become the world's leading ICT producer, the Xinhua news agency reported Monday, quoting the official People's Daily newspaper.

Xu Qing, vice director of the high-tech division of China's National Development and Reform Committee, said that ICT industry output this year will reach 2.4 trillion renminbi (US$290 billion), placing it third in the world. Growth is occurring strongly in areas such as digital television, integrated circuit manufacturing and third-generation (3G) telecommunication services, Xinhua said.

ICT accounted for 30 percent of the country's economic output in the first ten months of this year, Xinhua said.

The Ministry of Information Industry will spend $200 million per year to encourage domestic Chinese companies to develop their own core technologies, according to the report.
