NEW YORK, Dec 9 (Reuters) - Youth-oriented retailer Abercrombie & Fitch (NYSE:ANF - News) on Tuesday said it would retire its quarterly catalog, which draws regular protests because of its racy photos of scantily clad or naked young men and women.

Abercrombie & Fitch said its "2003 Christmas Field Guide" issue, already recalled from stores, would be the final publication of the magazine. Family-values groups have been quick to claim credit for getting the magazine off store shelves due to their protests.

"The company believes it is time for new thinking and looks forward to unveiling an innovative and exciting campaign in the spring," Abercrombie & Fitch said in a statement.

A company spokesman would not comment on the reasons for the decision or new marketing plans.

The decision came in the midst of an advertising campaign by a family-values group charging Abercrombie & Fitch with exploiting youth to sell its clothes, and a slump in its latest sales figures.

"We believe investors need to know what this company is doing. This was a company that promoted thong underwear to 10-year-olds," Phil Burress, president of Citizens for Community Values, told CNBC after the company announcement.

Burress said a new full-page print ad on Abercrombie & Fitch's marketing strategies was set to run on Wednesday in the Wall Street Journal. A copy of the ad on the group's Internet side reads: "If you're invested in Abercrombie & Fitch, are you fully aware of what They are invested in?">>>>
