A BIT MORE ON GORE AND DEAN: One thing that seems to be emerging from the accounts of the run-up to the Gore endorsement is how assiduously and graciously Dean courted Al and Tipper throughout much of the last year or so--a time when most of the other candidates were sitting on their haunches. This Washington Post account, for example, makes the point that Dean not only consulted with Gore while thinking through his position on Iraq, he consulted frequently with Tipper on mental health policy, one of her pet issues.
The take-away seems to be that, for all the criticism of Dean as blunt and shrill and in-your-face, he seems to have a surprisingly soft and subtle political touch. Much more so than his critics give him credit for. And, if the outcome of the Gore endorsement is any indication, much more so than his rivals, too.
