Steve, you're still getting actual mail? Not just bills, but like letters from people? That's really encouraging--you should feel good about that--you're still communicating in the physical world and so there is hope. I think there might be some people here who are totally addicted to electronic relationships, and I know from my own battle to get up from the computer and go sit in the garden that if some balance can be maintained, both the computer relationships and the garden seem more beautiful, because this can be a very enriching and thought-provoking forum. When I'm looking at the Pacific coastline going by and some wry comment someone made here pops into my mind, it seems like more, not less, and I think that feels good. But too much of anything is limiting.

It's nice that you're trying to read that book. I guess the way men and women communicate is really with their bodies (that must be why we're all still here), and their souls, because their thoughts are sure going off in different directions. I just read an article that postulates that the reason men won't stop and ask for directions when they're totally lost is that when men were primitive their survival depended on quick thinking on the run, since they were hunting. And so the primitive part of the male brain tells the guy he actually will find out where he is going if he just keeps going. The woman with him, who is really tired of driving around in circles, just wants to stop at a gas station and get a map. Her primitive sisters gathered nuts and berries, and so she is oriented by physical signs--a certain tall bush, a design in the wood of a tree trunk. Her family survived because she was a good sign (map) reader. The modern woman wants to read the map--she just thinks her guy is too insecure to ask for help. But he's sure he'll soon figure out how to get there, if he can just drive around. I think that's a very good story about how differently the sexes preceive reality.

I see you're from the Pacific Northwest also. I wish more people would reveal something of themselves in their personal profile--even if it's creative writing. Is this need for total mystery sometimes based on insecurity and overcompensation? I hope everyone feels safe here--obviously the things that are really personal should be protected, but there's still a lot to discuss.
