more from the land of Oz: some Australian carriers are in process of building FTTH networks and may well be offering blazing speeds fairly soon. At least one system will have the capacity to include video but the biggest carrier, national phone company Telstra (formerly owned by the govt) won't go that route because it is a partner with Fox in pay-to-view cable systems.

ISPs limit the amount of downloads per month in terms of gigs. Telstra's Big Pond offers unlimited downloads now in response to competition but once you hit a certain amount downloaded they slow your download speeds very substantially to around 384kbs, if I recall correctly.

Monthly charges for broadband are fairly high here, relatively speaking. ADSL is the primary broadband system in use.

Satellite TV seems very small here - I'v eseen only a small number of dishes, even in the Outback where one would expect greater usage.

This is all pretty OT but it shows some big differences in what is available in telecom services here vs the US. Cell phone usage is very big here and 3G is out now but the carrier offering it is getting huge numbers of complaints about spotty coverage, over-promises, equipment that doesn't work, etc.
