I finally got everything working after several hours of researching and trial and error. The following comments are for anyone who is contemplating a RAID installation. It may not apply to your situation but it might help if you run into problems.

Basically the drivers needed updating as did the BIOS on the controller card. I got updates at the website for the manufacturer.

The updating of the BIOS was a real pain because one needed a boot diskette that could allow one to get to DOS so that the BIOS could be updated before Windows installed. XP has done away with boot diskettes and so I had to resort to a 98SE boot diskette that I found with the aid of Google. One cannot update the BIOS on this controller card once Windows loads.

The rest of the configuration to achieve RAID 1 was relatively straightforward though it did not help that the manual which came with the card had screen shots that bore no resemblance to what came up when the RAID Management software was opened.

There was an option that permitted one to duplicate the drive and if one chose that option, the only data that would be destroyed would be that in the second drive - which was not an issue since it was a new drive.

All in all, it was a challenging, frustrating and interesting experience.
