US seeks interim steps towards flexible yuan
WASHINGTON - Acknowledging China cannot quickly adopt a free-floating exchange rate as the White House had hoped, Bush administration officials are discussing interim steps with Beijing which could make the yuan more flexible - and benefit US manufacturers - in the short term.

After talks between United States President George W. Bush and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, the White House said it would send advisers to Beijing next month to help plan the transition.

On Tuesday, Mr Bush bluntly told the visiting Chinese leader that 'we have to see concrete progress in that regard', according to a senior administration official.
