Government IDs And Enterprise Security Drive Biometric Growth

UK-based IMS Research issued a report today predicting the worldwide biometrics market will reach $1.8 billion by 2010, representing a 68% compound annual growth rate from 2002 to 2010. The key growth areas will be government ID card projects and big corporations and government agencies using biometric identifiers to secure access to buildings and computer networks. However, analyst Don Tait tells Card Technology that he included best and worst-case scenarios in his forecast, in part because it is hard to predict how quickly governments will act. "Often these decisions on implementing biometric solutions have political implications," Tait says. "How quickly these decision are made will have a bearing on the size of the market. Tait says the global biometric market will amount to about $200 million this year, a 50% increase over 2002. In 2004, he predicts the market will nearly double to $393.7 million. However, he says it could be as low as $325.7 million or as high as $420.5 million. Tait’s prediction of a $1.8 billion market by 2010 is more conservative than a forecast last month from Frost & Sullivan. The U.S.-based research firm predicted that just the two largest types of biometric technologies—fingerprint and facial recognition—would generate nearly $2.4 billion in revenue by 2009.
