I'll take one more stab at it then let it lie till events play themselves out. The mainstream American view of abortion is - I personally find it abhorrent but I don't want to impose my views on everyone else - so keep it mostly legal. That's why it works for pro-abort politician (even Catholics ), it's where the voters are. The equation changes completely if one of the candidates actually engaged in, and is unrepentant about, the practice Americans personally believe is abhorrent. If Dean said in a speech, Yes I performed abortions and I'm proud of the excellent care I gave my patients - you will see a rout that makes Reagan/McGovern look like a squeaker.
