If Maxtor does not announce the entering into the notebook disk drive market in 6 months, I'd be surprised, too.

Lot to chew in your post. Want to make a small point, about STX, saw a news release that ACER was choosing STX mobile drives for laptops.

Have been looking for more info on this one, ACER is big, bigger than most folks realize.
for instance, most laptops sold by Dell are ACER with a Dell sticker on them.

Anyway, MXO and WDC are going to have to jump into laptop fray very soon. Laptop sales are the big mover now and into near future. Growing right along with wireless internet access.

As others have stated, MXO & WDC entering the market along with STX ought to kill toshiba, and NEC 2.5" divisions. Margins are better on 2.5" drives plus dont forget the CE apps for 2.5". Margins will take a hit when all enter market and typical price decreases start kicking in, but, it would still be another feather in the cap of all of the big three.

Look for MXO and WDC to announce 2.5" production/qualification by as soon as Jan report. AMHO
