State exports to China soar

Dec. 15 There has been much consternation over trade deficits and the loss of manufacturing jobs to China in recent years and its impact on the state, national and Mexican economies.
However, the growth of the Chinese market is not all bad for the Arizona economy.

State exports to China are up considerably since 2001, when the country entered the World Trade Organization, which facilitates free trade and sets rules for international commerce.
Arizona companies that provide raw materials and make components for manufacturing, automobile and electronics plants are getting substantial business from China. Mainland textile makers also are acquiring cotton from Arizona farmers, benefiting a key state agricultural sector.
For the first three quarters, Arizona exports to China (excluding Hong Kong) have jumped 106 percent this year compared with the same period in 2002, and 374 percent since 2001.
"They've just been growing leaps and bounds during 2002 and 2003," said Sally Spray, international trade director for the Arizona Department of Commerce. Spray said the biggest Arizona exports to China are coming in the areas of electronics, semiconductors, manufacturing parts and cotton.
