China Protein Demand Rising (12/12/2003)

OMAHA (DTN) -- What is behind the seemingly insatiable appetite for soybeans displayed by China this year? Part of it can be explained by lower-than-expected domestic production, but it may be due more to changes in animal feeding practices, according to DTN contributing analyst Joel Karlin.

Karlin reviewed pork and broiler production in China in recent years. He said pork production has been increasing about 3% in each of the past three years, well below the 15 year average of 12%. Broiler output is expected to be unchanged this year, while the long-term growth rate has been over 5%.

"Such numbers would not seem to justify a 9.2% increase in projected total protein meal consumption this year," Karlin said, adding that protein meal consumption has been increasing at a 10.3% average rate over the past 15 years.
