seems we aren't producing a heck of a lot of stuff here any more.

Bad as the regressive Bush policies are for the present, it's their implications for the future that are terrifying. Imagine for a moment, that instead of the regressive tax cuts and the bloody war in Iraq, just half of that money was put into major NASA-like initiatives in high tech, biotech (a cure for cancer) and nanotech. Then, not only would we be more effectively pump priming the economy, but we would be building a base for the future - rather than mortgaging it.
