True, consumption needs to drop dramatically, even while lifestyle improves.

The only way that can occur is if there is a radical new level of acceptance of "voluntary simplicity" by the entire populace. However, in the inimitable phrasing of George Monbiot's recent article on the end of the Oil Era:

"People tend to take to the streets because they want to consume more, not less. Given a choice between a new set of matching tableware and the survival of humanity, I suspect that most people would choose the tableware."
