I expect (Bush's ratings) to go up. Is that rational, I don't think so

I agree. Already on C-SPAN I'm hearing the comments from the peckerheads giving Bush credit for the capture.

The American people have convinced me, that the only way to affect their opinion is repeat 3 or 4 word phrases that appeal to their baser instincts. Tell me why I'm wrong...please. I would really like to be wrong.

The American people are no different in this regard from people in any other democracy, or for that matter, in any other nation. There's a bare handful of us diehard intellectual types who keep pecking away at our keyboards hoping that rational analysis of vast swathes of data is the best way to come to a conclusion about a speculative move, a political choice or possibly even something important, like understanding the basic nature of man. Most people just don't want to bother.

My favorite quote on this recently is from a very well considered essay by George Monbiot on the knife's edge humanity finds itself on with the Hubbert's peak in world oil production upon us. This is going to be an earth changing event. But do people care? Here's Monbiot:

People tend to take to the streets because they want to consume more, not less. Given a choice between a new set of matching tableware and the survival of humanity, I suspect that most people would choose the tableware.

I think the most disappointing call I hear this morning on C-SPAN in response to the capture of Saddam came from 15 year old ROTC cadet. He spoke with pride of the capture and said he was happy because it meant that in five years 'when my 25 buddies and I' are over in Iraq, that they wouldn't be responsible for this particular manhunt.

First of all, how does this young boy know that he's going to Iraq? What are his instructors brainwashing him with? And can you see the parallels with the Hitler Youth movement of the 1930s? It's frightening to me. Not only are Americans basically ignorant of the world and the way our nation is governed, they also seem to be perfectly willing to be victimized by disinformation and propaganda and love to regurgitate the stuff! We do live in a zombie nation.
