Had to run outside and brush the snow off the dish...<s>. One disadvantage of satellite internet connections....

The American people are no different in this regard from people in any other democracy, or for that matter, in any other nation.

I wish. I found in England that the people are far more knowledgeable about the world than the average American. They might just be more knowledgeable about America than the average American is.

They trusted Blair and recognized that their trust had been betrayed. 60% of Brits [poll ~6 months ago] thought Blair should resign. Speculate on what a US poll would return on the question of whether Bush should resign.

There's a bare handful of us diehard intellectual types who keep pecking away at our keyboards hoping that rational analysis of vast swathes of data is the best way to come to a conclusion about a speculative move, a political choice or possibly even something important, like understanding the basic nature of man. Most people just don't want to bother.

There you go....you know in your heart and mind that approach is futile in convincing the general population of anything.

People tend to take to the streets because they want to consume more, not less. Given a choice between a new set of matching tableware and the survival of humanity, I suspect that most people would choose the tableware.

And Bush would say....if you pick Halliburton's tableware, you'll save humanity. ....and the people would feel good about saving humanity by buying Halliburton's tableware.

think the most disappointing call I hear this morning on C-SPAN in response to the capture of Saddam came from 15 year old ROTC cadet. He spoke with pride of the capture and said he was happy because it meant that in five years 'when my 25 buddies and I' are over in Iraq, that they wouldn't be responsible for this particular manhunt.

That's who you're trying to talk to. That person will glaze over if you try to make a point out of the changing opinion of the US in Indonesia and ask "What do you think is the effect on the security of the US?"
